Media Audiences Task 5
- In what ways could your media object ‘influence’ the minds of a vulnerable audience?
The Wire is an extremely controversial programme in that it defines the current state of the ghettos of America which many have been reluctant to expose. Some of the characters are based on real people going through these atrocities on a day to day basis. It is shown on BBC2 at after 11pm and this is because of the strong language, sexual themes as well as the violence used. Already this shows that the BBC recognises the influence his could have on younger viewers and therefore feels the need to protect them. Similarly in America, the show is on quite late but still is one of the most watched on its slot. It shows a lot of violence mainly using fire arms and other weapons and for some viewers especially those engaged with gangs might find this encouraging to their situation. Many young viewers, mainly those at an age were watching such a programme could be easily influenced, might respect characters such as Avon Barksdale because they imply that in intimidation and violence gains you respect and money.
To a certain extent, the show does glamorise the idea of drug dealing equating to street recognition and wealth. Some viewers could be lured into a life like this especially if their constantly in this environment. However the show also makes it clear that this type of life has dire consequences and the graphic violence could steer those that might be contemplating having this lifestyle.
As much as influencing the audience, I personally do not think those that watch the show will go out the next day and attempt to become the biggest drug lord in their city. If anything it would deter them because of the risks. In an era where most TV shows shy from giving audiences realism, the Wire does so explicitly and within the context of what society is going through and this is what the audience appreciates more. If anything vulnerable audiences are educated rather than encouraged.
- What possible negative ‘effect’ does this media object have on the audience and society?
Because of the range of issues the show gives, it is capable of generating negative views, especially those of Black America and even for cops who already get a hard time in America. Many critics hail the show as ‘the best tv show ever made’ however the few that disagree are concerned by this issue of having a moral obligation to help the inner city community who suffer from the effects of the violence. Reihan Salam, of theamericanscene.com, suggests that “those that watch the show feel they have a richer appreciation of the struggles of inner city life and yet are exactly insulated as they were before”. As much as the audience are captivated by the characters, they still are watching from a distance and can go back to their normal everyday life. The show is achieving its goal for educating on the struggles of city living however whilst the show can finish, cities all around America are living the nightmare 24/7 with no pause or fast forward button. Because of the content of issues, sometimes it is really difficult to imagine that this is actually an ongoing battle very much real going on the streets.
